Pakistán es un país lleno de contradicciones. Aunque es el quinto país del mundo en población, existe un gran desconocimiento sobre el país, su cultura y sus gentes. A pesar de que el joven Estado sólo existe desde 1947, la cultura de la región se remonta a muchos miles de años atrás. Es un auténtico Estado multiétnico que no sólo alberga un gran número de grupos étnicos diferentes, y en el que se hablan muchas lenguas distintas, sino que en estas pocas décadas ha surgido una fuerte identidad nacional. El país es tan variado no sólo porque reúne a etnias tan diversas como los punyabíes y los pastunes, sino también por sus distintos climas y paisajes: desde las altas montañas y los glaciares del norte, y el fértil valle del río Indo en el este, hasta las zonas desérticas del sur y el suroeste. A esto hay que añadir un pasado lleno de acontecimientos, que comenzó ya en la Edad de Bronce, cuando durante la cultura del Indo se construyeron las primeras ciudades, se inventó una primera forma de escritura y se regaron las tierras.

Although it is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of population, there is a great deal of ignorance about the country, its culture and its people. Despite the fact that the young state has only existed since 1947, the culture of the region goes back many thousands of years. It is a veritable multiethnic state that is not only home to a large number of different ethnic groups, and many different languages are spoken here, a strong national identity has emerged in these few decades. The country is so varied not only because it unites such diverse ethnic groups as the Punjabi and Pashtuns, but also because of its different climates and landscapes: from the high mountains and glaciers in the north, and the fertile valley of the Indus River in the east, to the desert areas in the south and southwest. In addition, there is an eventful past, which began already in the Bronze Age, when during the Indus culture the first cities were built, a first form of writing was invented and the land was irrigated.
